Research
Variable stars; cataclysmic binaries, especially classic novae and dwarf novae; long-term stellar variability with low amplitudes; young stars, binary or multiple systems with low mass.
My research focuses on cataclysmic variable stars, in particular classical novae and dwarf novae. In collaboration with Claus Tappert and an international working group, we areusing several telescopes at international observatories in Northern Chile for the recovery and study of remnants of classical novae, determining orbital periods and other essentialparameters. –
Together with colleagues in Germany I am searching for classic novae, possibly reported over the past ~2500 years by ancient astronomers in the Far East. – Taking advantage ofthe new data from Gaia alerts we investigate the behavior of dwarf novae in quiescent state (between eruptions) on time scales between a few hours and several years, incollaboration with undergraduate and postgraduate students of the IFA. – I am also leading an international project that analyzes observations of the cataclysmic binary TT Ari,obtained with the Canadian space telescope MOST. –
In addition, there are projects outside the scope of cataclysmic variables: We use the ASAS database to investigate the long-term behavior of variable stars with low amplitudes. –I am also working in the area of low-mass young stars, especially in binaries and with sub-stellar objects (brown dwarfs and planets), based on observations with NACO andSPHERE of the Paranal Observatory (ESO), in collaboration with astronomers from Europe.
