Formation of the Milky Way
In order to understand the big picture of galaxy formation and evolution evolution, it is very important to also try to understand the formation of our own galaxy. For my undergraduate thesis at CIDA, I got involved in a project that searches for tidally disrupted satellites in the halo of the Milky Way. We have done this by searching for overdensities in the spatial and velocity distributions of RR Lyrae stars in the halo (see Vivas, Jaffe et al. 2008).
