The first SDSS/APOGEE Workshop on Outreach and Education will take place at the Hotel Gala (http://www.galahotel.cl/en/) in Viña del Mar, Chile, on May 25-26, 2016. The focus of the workshop is astronomy education and public outreach, with a particular focus on sharing strategies and methods, creating cross-cultural and multi-lingual ventures, forming E/PO collaborations, and exploiting the science and international reach of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) — which will soon be operating from parallel sites in the U.S. and Chile — for fostering these activities. We wish to bring together astronomers, educators, and journalists to achieve the above objectives, and also formulate methods by which we can promote the public face of SDSS and APOGEE within Chile, across the Americas and beyond.

With ten years of uninterrupted events, Dr. Nikolaus Vogt´s efforts towards astronomy outreach through UV Public Talks given on the first monday of every month between April and December, has always been very well received by a now very large community of people interested in learning more about this science. Last night, monday April 4, the 2016 season was begun in the Sala Rubén Dario of the Centro de Extensión of the Universidad de Valparaíso with a Talk titled "Einstein: the Lord of the Rings" given by Dr. Verónica Motta, professor and investigator from the Instituto de Física y Astronomía of the UV, whereby she gave an account on Gravitational Lensing in space, the thoeries that announced them and the observations that confirmed them, as well as applications that allow us to use them to peer into deep space, and the past. With an attendance of somewhat over 90 people, the talk ended with a lively session of questions and answers, moderated by Dr. Patricia Arévalo, member of the Instituto de Física y Astronomía who will share with professor Vogt the directing of these succesful events in the future. The detection of Gravitacional Waves in 2015 will be the subject of the next UV Public Talk that will be given by Dr. Víctor Cárdenas (UV) on May 2, 2016. El Instituto de Física y Astronomía, el Centro de Astrofísica de Valparaíso están organizando, junto a la Sociedad Astronómica de Valparaíso y Viña del Mar, SAVAL, la celebración del Día Nacional de la Astronomía 2016, a ser realizada en el Parque Cultural de Valparaíso, PCdV, el día sábado 19 de marzo próximo.

La Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica, CONICYT, a través de su Programa de Astronomía, adjudicó el Concurso de Propuestas de Observación Astronómica para Tiempo Chileno en el Telescopio APEX, semestre 2016-A a cuatro investigadores del IFA, de entre 18 en total, y que les permitirá acceder a tiempos de observación en el período comprendido entre enero y julio de este año. Este concurso, ganado por nuestros Investigadores Eduardo Ibar y Michel Cure, y dos Postdocs, Diah Gunawan y Johan Olofsson, forma parte del convenio firmado en 2002 entre CONICYT y la Organización Europea para la Investigación Astronómica en el Hemisferio Austral (ESO). El acuerdo busca potenciar la radioastronomía en Chile y desarrollar el proyecto APEX (Atacama Pathfinder Experiment), colaboración entre el Instituto Max Planck de Radioastronomía (MPIfR), el Observatorio Espacial de Onsala (OSO) y ESO. Entre los investigadores seleccionados para esta versión del concurso figuran destacados astrónomos nacionales y extranjeros, que realizan proyectos en diversas áreas de esta disciplina científica. La Sociedad Chilena de Astronomía, SOCHIAS, en su XIII Reunión realizada en Antofagasta esta semana, anunció la premiación al Dr. Nikolaus Vogt, investigador y Docente del Insituto de Fisica y astronomía de la U. de Valparaíso, con el Premio al Desarrollo de la Astronomía que reconoce el trabajo pionero en esta ciencia en Chile. De la misma forma fue galardonado el Dr. Hernan Quintana, Profesor de la Facultad de Fisica de la Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. La Ceremonia oficial de entrega del Premio se realizara en fecha aun por determinar.
